As 1.7 million children face a hunger crisis in the Cape of Africa, aid supplements like peanut butter could be a lifesaver, international aid agencies say, according to the AFP network.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The UNICEF group says the price of these ‘therapeutic foods’ has increased since the war in Ukraine has caused a general increase in prices.<\/p>\n
The footage shows malnourished African children receiving the small ready-to-eat peanut butter confections as they are then measured and vaccinated.<\/p>\n
UNICEF says it buys about 45,000 tons of such food aid a year, and that it is beginning to feel the brunt of the prices.<\/p>\n
Aripokiru Nakuxhan, mother of six children, tells about the poor state of food in the region.<\/p>\n
“We are hungry because there is no food, we only ate wild fruits because we have no cattle, we have nothing,” she says.<\/p>\n
“We depend only on the Edung trees where we collect wild berries, crush them, cook them and eat them, this is our food.”<\/p>\n
Local aid coordinator James Jarso said peanut butter confections can save lives in conditions of extreme hunger.<\/p>\n
