Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is ready to talk directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but “will not compromise on Moscow’s position during these negotiations,” his deputy told CNN.
Talks between the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Russia, held on Thursday in the Turkish city of Antalya, did not bring much progress, but Igor Zhovkva says Kiev was not very optimistic about the outcome from the beginning.
“It was a very good thing that they met, but unfortunately we can say that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia is not the one who makes the final decision. “The final decision to stop the war, to make a ceasefire, to withdraw troops is taken by one person only,” he said, referring to Putin.
Zhovkva immediately claimed that Zelensky was ready for a diplomatic solution, but that he had not been personally contacted by the Russian president or his aides.
“The last thing I heard from them was that we still have to work in the format of two delegations. “But look, the agreements reached during these negotiations are not being respected either,” said the senior Ukrainian official.
But what concessions is Kiev willing to make? Zhovkva affirmed that Ukraine is open to neutrality “If the NATO bloc is not ready at the moment to accept it into its ranks.” However, he added, “we need very strong security guarantees so that these terrible wars, that this terrible aggression, will not be repeated in the future.”
