Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of seeking to ‘wipe out the entire eastern region of the Donbas region’ as Ukrainian forces prepare for the final battle to defend the city of Mariupol.
Zelensky: Russian troops are preparing for a major operation to attack the east of our country. The attack will begin soon. They want to destroy all of Donbas, to destroy everything that once gave this region its name. Just as they are destroying Mariupol they want to wipe out other cities in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions as well.
Zelensky called on Ukrainians not to obey the orders of the invaders.
Volodymyr Zelensky: “Ignore the orders of the invaders. Do not cooperate with them. Protest. “We need to resist so that Russia does not ruin our lives in other Ukrainian cities, as it did in Donetsk and Luhansk.”
The Ukrainian president reiterated his call for the West to impose “a complete oil embargo on Russia.”

The Donbas, which covers most of eastern Ukraine, has been the country’s first line of conflict with Russia since 2014. A Russian victory in the region would terrify the West, but could save Putin’s war goals, while a defeat could cement his conquest as a historic failure.
