US lawmakers, who have just returned from a visit to Ukraine, warn that Washington’s threats of sanctions and diplomatic maneuvers are not enough to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to drop a possible attack on Ukraine.

The group of Democratic and Republican lawmakers visited Kiev on Saturday and Sunday, where they met with the commander of the Ukrainian special forces and US special operators and National Guard troops who are assisting in the training of the Ukrainian army, reports VOA. .

They described the situation as “very worrying” and called on the White House to expedite the delivery of weapons to Ukrainian forces in the hope of averting a Russian attack.

“To be fair, promises of strong action in the event of an attack will have little effect on Putin’s accounts.Republican lawmaker Michael Waltz told reporters Tuesday.

“Putin is doing this, largely because he thinks he can avoid the consequences“, Added the legislator Waltz. “We need to help Ukraine strengthen and increase the costs (which Russia would face if it attacks Ukraine) now”.

Even Democratic lawmakers who visited Ukraine urged the White House to take action that would make Russia immediately feel the consequences of a possible attack on Ukraine.

“If Putin attacks, I want him to know that he will face the consequences within five minutes, not from a conference of NATO countries on the measures to be taken in the coming weeks.Said Democratic lawmaker Seth Moulton.

““We must clearly communicate how the weapons we offer will cause great losses to Russian troops from the first day of an attack, and not just after a certain period of time,” he said. “Not only to convince or try to convince them that such an attack would be painful, but that a large-scale invasion operation would be difficult to undertake immediately.“, Added the legislator Moulton.

Lawmakers also expressed confidence that unlike in 2014, when Russia invaded Crimea, Ukrainian forces are now prepared for strong resistance if Putin sends Russian troops there. However, they said it would not be realistic to think that Ukrainian troops could resist for a long time.
