Greece’s coast guard today released footage of the rescue operation of dozens of migrants whose boat sank on an island in the Aegean.
The number of victims of the boat sinking reached 11 on Friday, as about 90 others were rescued, including children. The boat with migrants had arrived on the Greek island of Antikithera on Thursday evening and so far 11 bodies have been recovered, the coast guard told AFP.
The survivors included 27 children, 11 women and 52 men. “The search and rescue operation is ongoing and it is not clear how many migrants were in the boat before it sank,” said one official.
The disaster comes just one day when a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Folegandros Island, killing at least three people and leaving dozens missing.
The UN refugee agency said the accident in Folegandros is the worst this year in the Aegean Sea. The agency estimates that more than 2,500 people have died or been lost at sea trying to reach Europe from January to November.
