Venezuelan immigrants living in Peru made a special gift to themselves on the eve of the turn of the year: Anger at their politicians was brought out by punching a doll resembling Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro with baseball bats. Residents of the capital Lima on the other hand burned the doll of their leader, Pedro Castillo, this early New Year tradition in the South American country.
Carlos Alberto Nava, Venezuelan living in Peru: I will also buy a doll of President Nicolas Maduro to get some duffin out. I’m not in Venezuela, I can not stop anyone to do it. I will definitely buy it.
Armando Moreno Puente, puppet maker: Maduro is seen worldwide as a dictator. That’s why Venezuelans here hate him; they bought dolls to vent their anger there and shot them with sticks.
Fredy Sanchez, doll seller: People have a lot of anger inside, and they take it out on dolls. They want to hit President Pedro Castillo, for example, so they take the puppets and shoot them.
Meanwhile, others stand in line for a so-called ‘flower bath’, where 20 aymara “healers” from Peru and Bolivia pass yellow flowers, condor feathers and ostrich eggs over their bodies to start the whole of 2022.
