Israel has become the first country in the world to offer a fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine to people over 60 and health workers.
“Now we have another layer of protection,” Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on January 2.
“Israel will once again be at the forefront of global vaccination efforts.”
On December 30, 2021, Israel authorized the delivery of the fourth dose of the vaccine to persons with weak immune systems.
Israel was the first country to offer the third dose of the vaccine to the general population, a decision that has been followed by the United States and several countries in Europe.
A number of states are considering offering a fourth dose to older or immunocompromised individuals as data show that vaccine efficacy declines over time.
The Omicron variant of the coronavirus has led to a record number of cases of infection in the world, although preliminary data show that it causes mild symptoms and fewer deaths, compared to other variants.
However, vaccines are still very effective in preventing hospitalization and death from this virus.
