The Catholic Church in Rome on Tuesday considered offensive and unacceptable a funeral ceremony outside a church in the Italian capital where a Nazi flag was thrown over the coffin.
It was an online media outlet that published photos and videos of the funeral ceremony taking place outside St. Lucia church.
The published images showed dozens of people creating a corridor and honoring with fascist salute as soon as the coffin wearing the Nazi flag paraded in front of them.
On Tuesday, in a statement to the media, the vicar of Rome strongly condemned the scene and stressed that neither the parish priest nor the priest who celebrated the funeral were aware of what would happen outside after the Mass.
He considered the Nazi flag a terrible symbol and incompatible with Christianity.
“This ideological and violent exploitation, especially after an act of worship near a holy place, remains serious, offensive and unacceptable to the Catholic community of Rome and to all citizens of the good will of our city.“, He said.
The statement quoted parish priest Alessandro Zenobbi as distancing himself and the church from “every word, gesture and symbol expressed outside the church attributed to extremist ideologies far removed from the message of the Gospel of Christ.”
Pope Francis is technically the bishop of Rome, but he delegates the day-to-day management of the diocese to his parish priest, Cardinal Angelo De Donatis.
