New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has canceled her wedding ceremony shortly after announcing new restrictions against the pandemic in the country.
She said she would not allow herself to behave differently from her compatriots in pandemic conditions.
“I am no different from thousands of other New Zealanders who have felt the most devastating impact of the pandemic, the inability to be with loved ones when they are extremely ill,” she told reporters, adding that her marriage to presenter Clarke Gayford would not take place.
The site will be placed under extremely severe restrictions due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
Restrictions include a capacity of 100 people vaccinated at events and wearing the mask in shops and public transport.
The country has operated under strict rules since the pandemic began, which has kept the death toll in check. But with the release of the Delta variant, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern changed her strategy from eliminating COVID to encouraging more vaccinations.
