The United States has prepared specific sanctions against members of the Russian elite and their families in the event of Russia invading Ukraine, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said today.
Washington has identified “individuals belonging to or gravitating to the first circle around the Kremlin,” she said, noting that those individuals are “particularly sensitive targets” for sanctions because of their very close financial ties to Western countries.
“It’s just one of the elements in our desire to strike at Russia from all angles in the event that it attacks Ukraine,” Psaki said. The UK, one of the Russian oligarchs’ favorite investment destinations, also announced today that it is strengthening its arsenal of possible sanctions against Russian individuals or companies.
Washington has been studying the details of major sanctions that the Americans are threatening to impose on Russia in the event of a military escalation. The United States has already threatened to cut off Russian banks’ access to dollar transactions and ban the sale of US technology to Russia.
