The high-voltage cable snapped and fell on homes and people shopping in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital on Wednesday.
Serious images posted on social networks showed the consequences of the catastrophe with motionless bodies lying in the pools of water in the market.
It is not yet clear what caused the cable to break.
In a statement the country’s electricity company said it believed a lightning strike could have hit the installations, causing them to collapse.
Police said the tragedy occurred in the Matadi-Kibala area in Kinshasa and many people had died on the spot.
Local media reported that most of those killed were women market workers. “The cable snapped and fell into a puddle of water created by the rains,” a local government spokesman told AFP.
One trader said after the tragedy that the market is often flooded by rains and traders during their work have to move through water.
