The riots did not take long to emerge in Montenegro, where supporters of one of Montenegro’s former ruling majority parties took to the streets demanding early parliamentary elections.
With the slogan “Protection of the electoral will of the citizens”, the protest was led by the officials of the Democratic Montenegro Party, and was supported by the deputies and officials of the pro-Serbian Democratic Front.
The demonstrators also expressed dissatisfaction with the possible formation of a minority government, which was proposed by their former political partner, Dritan Abazovic, chairman of the URA Civic Movement.
The Democrats, the Democratic Front and the URA jointly formed the ruling coalition after the 2020 elections.
The February 9 protest was attended by several thousand citizens and activists of political entities, who held state flags and banners calling on citizens to resist the “theft of electoral will.”
“People, prepare for the election. “Let us return the mandate to the people and let the people decide what the future will be,” said Democrat leader Aleksa Becic, who was fired as speaker of parliament on February 7.
He pointed out that a possible new government would depend on the will of the Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, to Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic, while criticizing Abazovic for saying that he intended to form the new executive with the support of of Djukanovic, whose party has accused him of corruption and organized crime.
