NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg did not hide his concern over the situation on the border with Ukraine.
During a visit to a military air base in Romania, home to about 1,000 troops, he met with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and other senior officials, who were told “there is a real risk of an armed conflict in Europe”. “We are not sure what will happen. We therefore call on Russia to escalate the situation.
“We are vigilant and prepared and that is why the presence of NATO troops in Romania is so important,” Stoltenberg said.
His visit to Romania coincided with the arrival of US Army convoys, with troops and equipment at the Romanian base. The United States is repatriating 1,000 troops from Germany to Romania, as US officials fear that Russia will soon invade Ukraine.
NATO troops have also been deployed in Poland. Russia has amassed over 100,000 troops along the border with Ukraine and conducted a series of military maneuvers in the region. But Moscow continues to say it has no plans to invade the neighboring country.
