The main topic of their meeting was Ukraine, but in Moscow, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz clashed with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the Kosovo case.
During the joint press conference, Vladimir Putin rejected the idea that NATO is a peaceful alliance, and justified this, citing the bombing of Serbia by the North Atlantic Alliance.
“NATO is not a peaceful defense alliance,” said the Kremlin chief.
He underlined that in Serbia, NATO bombed Belgrade without a mandate from the United Nations Security Council.
But the German chancellor openly opposed it, reminding him that the alliance intervened in Kosovo at the time to stop the genocide.
After the meeting with Putin, Scholz admitted that in many points the parties are far from each other. “But it’s our duty the devil took us to commit to peace,” the chancellor appealed to Putin as well as to himself. The Russian president answered the question about war and peace, saying that Russia does not want war “of course”.
He is concerned that “any negotiation process is likely to be too long”, and they can not accept this. Words that sound like gun talks filled the table, analysts say.
