If you know your birth chart, you may know that each planet rules a certain sector of life – but did you know that your sign also has a planetary ruler of its own?
In fact, each sign of the zodiac can attribute some of its defining characteristics to the energy of the planet that directs them. In the case of the first Aries, who are known for their cheeky attitude and ambitious hearts, they owe much of their courage and perseverance to a certain red planet.
These impulsive fire signs are bold and always ready for friendly competition, which has to do with the rocky planet in astrology: determination, conflict and passion.
You guessed it: Aries zodiac signs are ruled by Mars. In astrology, the red planet is as corrosive as it is intense and rules primitive instincts – think of sexual desire, passion, aggression and knee reactions.
“Mars gives Aries its initial, intense and endless physical strength,” Narayana Montufar told Bustle. “Mars’s influence on Aries is what fuels this fiery sign of leadership and the desire to be an unstoppable force.” And because Mars greatly influences the zodiac signs of Aries, the signs of fire are symbols of strength, determination and coping with the inevitable conflict.
Although Mars is a planet associated with disaster, the broken planet is responsible for what brings you passion and fosters your determination, so there are many positive things to gain when traveling through the zodiac. Plus, knowing what makes Mars a mark is a great way to better understand your birth chart.

Everything about Mars, the ruling planet of Aries
Astronomer Galileo Galilei was the first person to use a telescope in astronomy to observe Mars in 1609. The planet has two moons and is known for its red color and rocky terrain. In Greek and Roman mythology, Mars is symbolized as the god of war. Although there are slight differences, for the most part, the Mars defender symbolizes a leader on the front line of the conflict.
Similarly, Mars represents the most essential parts of life, such as natural impulses, aggression, and sex. “In astrology, Mars is the planet of motivation, ambition, passion and action. “It is the embodiment of masculine raw energy (or yang) that helps us go after what we like and desire,” says Montufar.
The Impact of Mars on Aries
Mars is a planet of passion and action, which explains why Aries likes to take responsibility and dig its way to get what they want. The pioneers of the zodiac, Aries are not afraid to be the first, which is mainly due to the representation by the planet of ambitions. “At its highest vibration, Aries people lead by example, paving the way for those who want to follow in their footsteps,” Montufar explains. “Aries is the leader of the group because of his extraordinary amount of willpower and perseverance.” The cardinal sign’s readiness for action and willingness to lead the group are heavily influenced by Mars, inspiring Aries to strive for first place.
But their initiative and courage are just some of the distinguishing features given by Mars. According to Montufar, “At its lowest vibration, Aries can emerge as an impulsive and out-of-competition opponent due to the shadow side of Mars. “After all, Mars is the only planet associated with our most primary instincts for anger, aggression and survival.”
