Russia and Belarus will end today the large-scale military exercise that began on February 10 on Belarusian territory, not far from the Ukrainian border.
At Saturday’s exercise, the armed forces of Russia and Belarus simulated a battle, using aircraft, tanks and rocket launchers. The main part of the exercise took place in an area of Belarus, which is just over 100 km from the Ukrainian border.
This part of the joint exercise between the two countries came just hours after US President Joe Biden from Washington said he was convinced, based on information held by his country’s intelligence services, that Russia would invade Ukraine next week. future.
And shortly before British Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke of the possibility of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, stressing, among other things, that it could be one of “the biggest wars in Europe since 1945.”
He made the statement from Munich, where the Security Conference is being held, with US Vice President Kamala Harris and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in attendance.
After the death of two Ukrainian soldiers on Saturday due to clashes with pro-Russian rebels in the east of the country, Zelensky criticized the attitude of Western countries towards Russia, adding that Ukraine will not respond to Russian provocations, but will defend itself in case of an invasion.
Also Saturday, Russia conducted several long-announced missile tests that were presented as training for a nuclear attack. It tested several ballistic missiles and cruise missiles, while the New York Times described them as “technologically insignificant” as they could be easily tracked, but what matters is the fact that these tests were conducted in recent days, while Russia is at the center of world attention.
The exercise involved thousands of Russian soldiers and included tactics of simulating defensive and offensive actions in the event of aggression against Russia and Belarus from another country.
There have been rumors for some days that this exercise could be used as a pretext for sending troops and preparing an attack on the invasion of Ukraine, but so far nothing has happened to show unequivocally that after the exercise there will be an invasion of this country.
