The government in Kiev announced that fighting has broken out on the streets of the Ukrainian capital.
The day before, major world media such as the BBC and The Guardian reported that Moscow forces had entered the northern district of Kiev, Obolon, located just 9 kilometers from the parliament, located in the city center. However, the Russian army has encountered strong resistance. Explosions, artillery fire and automatic shots were heard in the capital this morning, however they were at some distance from the center. The Ukrainian military says the Russians attacked a military base on a main street in Kiev, but their attack was repulsed.
A post on the military’s Facebook page also states that over 3,500 Russian soldiers involved in the incursion have been killed and nearly 200 others captured. It is also noted that Russia has so far lost 14 fighter jets, 8 helicopters and 102 tanks. The BBC states that it has been impossible to verify such allegations independently. Moscow itself has so far not released casualty reports. According to some reports, missiles are being launched over Ukraine from the Black Sea as well.
Airstrikes have been recorded in some areas, as violence apparently is escalating. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Russians have already taken control of the city of Melitopol – the first important inhabited center taken from them since the beginning of the occupation. Melitopol is located very close to the port city of Mariupol, in the southeastern Zaporizhzhya region. Residents of Kiev were asked to make their own Molotov cocktails and use them to repel the invaders, while many families spent the night in shelters as the capital was hit by Russian missiles.
Images, which have also not been verified, are already circulating on social media; she points to a partially destroyed apartment block in Kiev, while being accompanied by the comment: “The Russians said they would not hit civilian structures”!
The capture of Kiev is of key importance to Moscow and to the success of the Russian occupation. But it could also include urban warfare, which will bring huge losses to both sides.
