The leaders of Greece and Turkey have met in Istanbul following numerous recent clashes over maritime, energy, Aegean island status and migration.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed bilateral and international relations, as well as the Russian occupation of Ukraine, a spokesman for the Turkish presidency said.
Greece and Turkey are NATO allies, but have strained relations over competing claims to maritime borders that affect energy exploration rights in the eastern Mediterranean.
Since then, Greece has embarked on a major military modernization program. Officials from both countries resumed exploratory talks in 2021 after a five-year hiatus to lay the groundwork for the start of formal negotiations, but have made little progress.
At Sunday’s meeting, the two leaders agreed to keep communication channels open “despite disagreements” and to improve bilateral relations, the Turkish statement said.
“With the intention of launching a new page in bilateral relations“Erdogan told Mitsotakis that he believes the two countries can make progress on issues such as the Aegean, minorities, the fight against terrorism and migration.” He added that neighbors should speak regularly, and not just in times of crisis.
