A video of President Volodymyr Zelensky calling on the Ukrainian army to hand over weapons has been circulating on social media.
The video turns out to be fake, the BBC confirms. Although his lips move in sync with the audio, Zelensky’s head does not match the background behind, while the voice does not sound like his.
A photo from the ‘fake’ video appeared on the website of the Ukrainian TV channel “Ukrayina 24” and the text of the message was briefly broadcast on television.
“Ukraine 24” later clarified that the website had been hacked. The website is currently inaccessible to readers.
Zelensky himself said the video was fake. In an Instagram post, he said that the only thing he could say was that “the Russians should drop their weapons and go home.”
The video clip could have been made using “deepfake” technology to modify the video footage, and if confirmed, Zelensky’s clip would be the first confirmed falsification of the war in Ukraine.
