An American citizen has lost his life from the Russian bombing in Chernihiv, say the Ukrainian police. The US State Department confirmed the news, expressing condolences to the family.
Asked about the victim during a conference, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he could confirm that a US citizen had been killed, but did not provide further details.
A Ukrainian police statement said the deaths were the result of Russian artillery fire in the city.
Chernihiv, northeast of Kiev and near the Russian border, has been heavily bombed by Russian forces since the start of the war more than three weeks ago.
Earlier Thursday, regional leader Vyacheslav Chaus said more than 50 bodies had been brought to the city morgue on Wednesday. Among those killed were more than 10 people in line to buy bread.
