Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu spoke with optimism for the daily Hurriyet, to which he told that Russia and Ukraine are very close to the agreement, and out of the 6 points under discussion, according to him, there is agreement on four of them.
The biggest obstacles are Donbass and Crimea, while for the rest, the parties seem ready to make concessions. Zelebsky however displayed a different attitude. Negotiations are continuing as for inertia he said. The 6-point formula under discussion, according to him, is actually just a list of the party’s claims. However, the Ukrainian president added that “they are ready to negotiate in any way and in any format, because if the talks with Putin fail, it means the beginning of the Third World War.”
According to some British newspapers, the Kremlin chief is ready to meet Zelensk in person, however this has not yet been fully confirmed. So far Zelensky has left open the idea of non-NATO membership. The Austrian model of neutrality, which would mean a permanent commitment included in the Constitution, or a Swedish model, which is practically a political choice, reversible in theory, was also discussed.
But the Kiev government requires guarantees of protection, and the guarantors must be willing to intervene with their armies in the event that Russia again threatens Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Zelensky wants his country to be backed by the US, Britain and Turkey, but in the meantime this would in some way reproduce the NATO defense mechanism, and it is not known how much Putin can accept such a thing.
