For 27 days, Ukraine has been facing Russian forces trying to invade the country, while US President Joe Biden has warned that Russia could use biological and chemical weapons in its eastern neighbor.

However, Biden says that now Russian President Vladimir Putin “is more behind the wall, as the Ukrainians are resisting. Biden’s response came after the Pentagon said earlier that there was “clear evidence” that Russian forces were committing war crimes in the neighboring country. Biden’s portrayal of Putin last week as a “war criminal,” a “murderous dictator” and a “bandit” has caused an even deeper rift in relations with Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry said they were “unworthy of such a high-ranking state figure” and risked severing US-Russia ties. Through a protest note handed to the US ambassador to Moscow, the Russian side also warned that relations between Russia and the US could be completely severed. The UN International Court of Justice has already ordered Moscow to stop its occupation and a prosecutor at the International Criminal Court has launched an investigation into war crimes.

According to the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom, Russian forces are “stuck in Ukraine”, while Mariupol is trying its best not to surrender to the Russians. In the southern city, the devastation is incalculable.

A day earlier, 8,000 people had been evacuated from conflict zones, according to officials in Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has again called for direct talks with Putin, stressing that the war could not end if they did not meet face to face.

14:00 “Children are dying of dehydration”, Mariupoli, Hell on earth

27-year-old Victoria, who managed to escape from the besieged city of southern Ukraine, Mariupol, tells 5 Live Breakfast how she left her family behind while fleeing to a village about 20 km away. She says many people do not have food and water. Victoria adds that she was unable to help other family members leave Mariupol and is desperate to get them out.

13:59 American espionage ‘enters’ into Putin’s mind

The master of American espionage, General James Clapper who oversaw the CIA, the FBI, the NSA and served as one of President Barack Obama’s top advisers has made public some details of what intelligence work can be done to determine which is the mood of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

13:49 Ukraine: Over 15,000 Russian troops killed in the war

About 15,300 Russian troops have been killed since the start of the war, according to Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. The ministry also lists 509 tanks, 1,556 armored combat vehicles and 252 artillery systems among Russia’s military losses since it invaded Ukraine on February 24. Russia has only once given a figure for the loss of its troops – 498 dead as of March 2 – while the US recently estimated that some 7,000 Russian troops had been killed in the conflict.

13:40 Zelensky speaks with the Pope, calling on the Vatican to mediate

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has spoken to Pope Francis and suggested that the Vatican could play a mediating role in ending the war with Russia. In a post on TwitterZelensky described to the Pope “the difficult humanitarian situation” and how the rescue corridors were being blocked by Russian troops. Zelensky added: The mediating role of the Holy See [juridiksionit të Papës] to end human suffering would be appreciated. This comes after Zelensky said Monday that Jerusalem could potentially be a venue for future high-level peace talks between Ukraine and Moscow.

13:30 Escape from Mariupol / The Russians attack the cars, they do not even spare the children

Mykola Trofymenko, head of Mariupol State University, who is also on the city council, told the BBC about his escape from Mariupol last week with his wife and five-year-old son. They are now living in the western city of Lviv. Before leaving, they had spent several weeks hiding with about 80 neighbors in a basement while the city was under attack.

13:15 Russia “remains” without tanks! The factory is closed, the sanctions “suffocated”

International sanctions are showing strong signs of impact on the Russian economy. The Ukrainian military announced that the company that manufactures and repairs Russian tanks, has suspended work at its factory in central Russia, in Chelyabinsk due to lack of imported parts.

13:00 At least 117 children have been killed since the beginning of the Russian occupation of Ukraine

At least 117 children have been killed and more than 155 others injured in the country since the start of the Russian occupation of Ukraine, reports the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine. He says most of the casualties were reported in or around the Ukrainian capital Kiev (58) and the northeastern city of Kharkiv (40). He adds that in Kharkiv, a Russian tank reportedly hit a car belonging to a family traveling with two children. While in the besieged southern port city of Mariupol, he says, evacuation buses carrying children were hit by Russian bombing.

12:00 He escaped Hitler, he was killed by Putin

A 96-year-old Ukrainian survivor of the Nazi Holocaust during World War II was killed during a Russian attack on the eastern city of Kharkiv. Boris Romantschenko died during the Russian bombing of his apartment block on Friday, relatives said. Russian forces have been bombing Kharkiv, which lies just 50km from the border, for more than three weeks. At least 500 civilians have now been killed there, Ukrainian officials say. Police said one of the victims has been identified as a nine-year-old boy.

10:47 Pentagon: “Clear evidence” of war crimes in Ukraine

The Pentagon on Monday accused Russian forces of committing war crimes in Ukraine. Mr Kirby also accused Russian forces of carrying out “indiscriminate attacks on civilians” that were “intentional” in many cases. He said the United States would look forward to ongoing investigative processes and contribute to investigations into war crimes committed by Russian forces. Last week, after President Joe Biden called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “war criminal,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called his characterization “unacceptable and unforgivable rhetoric.”
