German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Monday that EU membership talks with Albania and northern Macedonia should begin as soon as possible.
As Reuters reports, the Chancellor added that more delays in this regard will make the Western Balkans more sensitive to external influence.
“It is clear to both Germany and Sweden that the EU needs to move forward with institutional reforms in order to expand further.“, Said Scholz at a joint press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.
The start of membership talks for Tirana and Skopje was blocked in November 2019, after Bulgaria, as an EU member state, vetoed the membership of Northern Macedonia.
Sofia demanded that an agreement be reached first on the Macedonian language and identity, which they say has “Bulgarian roots”.
Northern Macedonia and Bulgaria have set up working groups to resolve disputes so that Skopje and Tirana can start European integration talks.
