A sharp rise in energy bills turned into the latest evidence of the worst cost-of-living crisis that has plagued Britain for years
Some 22 million households will see their annual bills rise to around 2000 2,000, says CNN, as the UK energy regulator raises the price ceiling by 54% – the biggest jump since it began limiting price increases in 2017. The ceiling price sets a limit on the maximum quotation that suppliers can set per unit of energy. Such an increase would double the number of English households living with the so-called “fuel stress”, ie those who spend at least 10 percent of total income on energy bills. There could soon be 5 million such families in Britain, the article continues.
I do two jobs, I’m thinking about a third because prices are rising, while wages are not. There is no real help from anyone to support people who have struggled to pay the bills. So it will be very difficult. It will hit us very hard. I mean, everything is rising at the same time, gas, energy and fuel prices, and that’s pretty hard. I do not have a bad salary, and yet they are struggling to make a living, and I just do not understand how this can be right.
“This is the biggest energy price shock I can rememberSaid Adam Scorer, chief executive of the National Energy Action Association. “This reality will oppress many low-income people“, He added.
British bills had risen by 12% since last October, the last time it intervened in the price ceiling, as the global natural gas supply crisis pushed wholesale prices to record levels. The Resolution Foundation, an organization that analyzes living standards, estimates that if prices rise further in October, the number of British households struggling to pay their energy bills could reach 7.5 million – almost a third of all households in the United Kingdom.
