Hungary said on Wednesday it was ready to pay for Russian gas in rubles, coming out against the EU stance that it has denied payment in such a form.
It was Prime Minister Viktor Orban himself who confirmed this in a press release.
Orban also said that he had invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold peace negotiations in Hungary, where France and Germany could also participate.
“Putin’s response was positive but he said he had his own conditions for such a meeting. “However, this is a war started by Russia, they have attacked Ukraine, this is the position of the EU and this is the position of Hungary.”
The Russian president was among the first to congratulate Orban on his victory in the April 3 elections. Budapest has backed EU sanctions and condemned Russian aggression, but has refused to help Ukraine with weapons, while rhetoric against them has angered Western allies.
Yet Orban, through whom Hungary has cultivated close business ties with Russia, has spoken out against EU sanctions on Russian gas or arms shipments to Ukraine through their territory.
