Her torn body, giant wings crashed to the ground, one of the engines burned and destroyed: The world’s largest commercial aircraft, the Antonov AN-225, once the pride of the Ukrainian Air Force, is now a pile of scrap metal.
His real damage was seen by CNN reporters after Russian troops withdrew last week from Hostomel airfield outside Kiev, one of the first strategic targets of the Russian occupation of Ukraine. The jet was in the hangar, awaiting a repair.
“As we speak, our Mriya, which in our language means dream, lies ruined behind our arms. It is emotionally difficult because two days before the start of the war I was here with my team. We were looking at ways to strengthen security at the airport. it was the last time it was filmed intact“, Said Denys Monastyrsky, Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
The destruction of the AN-225 was considered a symbolic loss at the start of the conflict. Originally built to support the Soviet spacecraft program of the 1980s, this aircraft was considered a marvel of modern aerospace engineering, regularly attracting crowds both to the on-air acrobatic show and to its daily cargo missions around the world.
Shortly after reports of its destruction, Ukrainian authorities pledged to rebuild the plane, insisting that Russia would be forced to pay $ 3 billion for it.
