Two U.S. asylum seekers, a Ukrainian and a Russian, were married in a small ceremony in the Mexican border town of Tijuana. Ukrainian Daria Sakhniuk and Russian Semen Bobrovski got married on Wednesday in the Mexican civil registry offices.
The two had lived in Ukraine before the war, they told the Telemundo television network, and had planned to get married in Kiev.
“I’m very happy to have met some very good people who could help us get married at this wedding here in Mexico, Tijuana.” Sakhniuk told the network.
After the ceremony, the couple celebrated Sakhniuk’s 27th birthday with a traditional Mexican “taquiza” celebration and a mariachi band.
According to a new announcement from Tijuana city council, they had arrived in Mexico two weeks ago. Bobrovski was unable to seek asylum in the US because of immigration measures that are only available to Ukrainian citizens fleeing the war.
Now that Bobrovski is married to a Ukrainian, the couple hopes to be allowed to enter the US and relocate to New York.
