Denmark and Sweden announced that a Russian spy plane had violated their airspace, which is why both countries have called on the Russian ambassadors for explanations.
Danish officials confirmed that the violation of the airspace of this country was recorded on Friday evening in the east of the island of Bornholm. After that, the same plane flew to Sweden.
“The Russian ambassador has been summoned for this new airspace violation,” Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod wrote on Twitter, calling the event “unacceptable and extremely disturbing in the light of Russian aggression in Ukraine.”
The Swedish Foreign Ministry confirmed that the same would happen to Moscow’s envoy to Stockholm.
“There are procedures in place for such cases,” she said in a statement. Denmark is a member of NATO, while Sweden is embroiled in debates over whether it should also take the step of joining the globe’s largest military alliance.
Finland, meanwhile, is expected to decide on May 12 on its application for NATO membership. According to the local newspaper Iltalehti, the decision must be taken in two steps: first the Finnish president, Sauli Niinisto, announces that he has given the approval, and the parliament must also give his OK.
