Russian forces must leave “all of Ukraine”, while the West must send weapons to other countries threatened by Russia, said a few days ago the British Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss.
“We need to make sure that, along with Ukraine, the Western Balkans and countries like Moldova and Georgia are stable and have the capacity to maintain their sovereignty and freedom,” she added.
With the conflict in Ukraine, and Russia’s efforts to destabilize regions seeking rapprochement with the West, the Western Balkans have recently attracted the attention of the EU. Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi stressed during his official visit to Tirana that the integration of the Western Balkans region is in the interest of the European bloc.
“We must definitely use everything we have at hand. “We can not have a war in Europe and Europe not use all its opportunities to stabilize the Western Balkans,” he said. But how have the countries of the region responded to the Russian occupation of Ukraine? Were they unanimous in their harsh response to this onslaught?
A REL map shows that Albania, Montenegro and northern Macedonia have imposed sanctions on Russia, closed airspace and voted for a UN resolution; Kosovo is not in the UN, however, has adopted a resolution condemning the Russian occupation of Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina has not reached the level of sanctions but only the closure of airspace and the vote on the UN resolution, while Serbia has agreed only with the latter.
