A UN spokesman has confirmed that the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol was successfully completed, with 101 Ukrainians rescued from the Azovstal steel plant arriving in Zaporizhia.
The operation by the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross aimed to remove mainly women and children from the Azovstal steel plant.
Previous attempts to evacuate civilians had failed.
Osnat Lubrani, the UN coordinator in Ukraine and humanitarian coordinator, said the people she traveled with told horrifying stories of the hell they went through.
Sky News correspondent Alex Rossi said the civilians had had an “extremely long” and “difficult” journey and many of the families gathered there waiting for the evacuees “did not think they would ever see this day”.
Some of the civilians have been inside the Azovstal steel plant since the start of the occupation on February 24th.
“For more than two months they have lived underground, under constant bombardment,” Rossi said.
“There is a network of tunnels under this Soviet-era steel plant, but as the flow of occupation has continued, it is or is turning into a grave.”
As evacuators reached the center safely, Rossi said there are a number of civilians and fighters still trapped inside the steel plant.
