“The moment of the arrest of El Chapos’s wife is very interesting,” said Falko Ernst, an analyst at the International Crisis Group.
This is partly due to the fact that he seems to be conveying a message from the United States that he has not given up the traditional means of arresting high-profile figures and that their use in the US is by no means a thing of the past, he adds. Mexican prosecutors recently bypassed charges against former defense secretary General Salvador Cienf Uegos, who was arrested in October for trespassing at Los Angeles airport for the defense of a drug cartel.
The Mexican government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, managed to turn it around by claiming that the US acted without its knowledge and failed to behave as an ally. Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexico’s most notorious cartel boss, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, was arrested in Virginia on drug trafficking charges. The 31-year-old, a US citizen, was handcuffed at Dulles Airport for planning to send cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana to the United States for distribution.
