Just days after Kim Jong Un pledged to bolster his country’s nuclear arsenal at “the fastest possible pace” and threatened to use such weapons against rivals, North Korea today launched a ballistic missile into eastern waters. this was confirmed by South Korean and Japanese officials.
This is the 14th round of missile launches this year in North Korea and also comes six days after South Korea’s new president takes office for a five-year term.
Through a press release, the South Korean military clarified that the missile was launched from the North capital region and flew towards the waters of the east coast. The statement said the South Korean military is monitoring new weapons that North Korea could test.
The Japanese Coast Guard immediately called on ships sailing off the Japanese coast to be careful. Observers are concerned that the really rapid pace of weapons testing by North Korea shows that the country has made progress in missile programs and is seeking to exert pressure on Washington, due to the stalemate in negotiations.
They are convinced that Kim wants to use his atomic arsenal to gain international recognition of North Korea as a nuclear power, as he believes such a move could push the United States to ease economic sanctions imposed on Pyongyang.
