Russia’s war against Ukraine has shaken the European continent, ended peace in Europe and is happening at a time when everyone needs to work to protect each other, European Council President Charles Michel said during a May 19 visit. In Serbia.

After talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Michel said that the European integration of Serbia and the Western Balkans should be accelerated and confirmed the “full commitment” of the EU in the membership negotiations.

He also stressed that the process of enlarging the bloc with the European Balkans should be more efficient and dynamic and that “the solution can lie in gradual and progressive integration, during the accession process.”

Michel said the candidate countries should feel the “benefits” of membership in the European Union.

At the press conference, Michel did not explicitly say that Serbia should impose sanctions on Russia, and the meeting with Vucic was held behind closed doors.

“President Michel expressed very strongly the desire and expectations for Serbia to join the sanctions against Russia. I informed him about our positions “, said the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuçi., In the press conference after the meeting with Michel.

Serbian officials have repeatedly said that Serbia does not support the imposition of sanctions against Russia, as they say that this is how they are protecting the vital interests of the state.

Serbia is the only country in the Western Balkans region that has not imposed a sanctions regime on Russia. The international community is increasingly calling on Serbia to follow the sanctions regime, as EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said there can be no European future for states that maintain contacts with Putin./REL
