US President Joe Biden has accused his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin of trying to “eliminate” Ukraine and said the Russian leader must pay a “long-term price” for invading the country.
Speaking from Tokyo on May 23, Biden told a news conference that Russian bombing of civilian infrastructure, such as schools, theaters, hospitals and museums, showed Putin’s clear intent for the February 24 invasion.
“I believe that what Putin wants is to eliminate Ukraine’s identity,” Biden said.
“He can not invade it, but he can try to destroy its identity.”
Ukraine has accused Russia of committing atrocities in the unprovoked invasion and has said it has identified more than 10,000 possible war crimes.
Russia denies targeting civilians and claims that the allegations of atrocities presented by Ukraine are false.
Before the start of the war, which Putin called a “special military operation,” the Russian leader said Ukraine had never really been a state, and that Ukraine was part of Russia’s “history, culture and spiritual space.”
Biden has said Putin must “pay a high price for his barbarism in Ukraine” to make sure other countries do not take similar steps.
His statement is believed to have been a direct reference to tensions between China and Taiwan.
