Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, on Wednesday approved a bill that would raise the upper age limit for military recruits serving in the Russian military on a contractual basis.
Under the bill, which passed all three readings on May 25, men up to age 65 will now be eligible to serve in the military. The new border also applies to foreign nationals wishing to serve in the Russian army.
The current law allows Russian men up to 40 years old and foreigners up to 30 years old to serve in the military.
The authors of the bill, lawmakers Andrei Kartapolov and Andrei Krasov, said raising the age limit would help bring young specialists with the “required skills”, mainly medical staff and engineers, closer together.
The bill was passed while Russia continues its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, launched on February 24.
Russia has faced fierce resistance from Ukrainian forces, with many Western intelligence officials saying Moscow expected a quick end to the fighting. Instead, they say, her troops suffered casualties and thousands were killed as their advance was halted.
Russia has not recently revealed the exact number of victims from this conflict. On March 25, it was announced that 1,351 Russian soldiers had been killed in the fighting.
