European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said that the European Union bloc’s sixth package of sanctions against Russia, which includes a major embargo on Russian oil imports, will not only affect the amount of oil Moscow sells. overseas, but also in price reductions.
“We are the most important client for Russia,” Borrell told reporters as he joined a two-day EU summit to discuss the war in Ukraine.
“The goal is to have less financial resources for Russia to feed its war machine,” he added.
In the late hours of May 30, European bloc leaders agreed on a new package of sanctions, which is expected to block two-thirds of Russian oil imports to the EU.
The ban is a compromise because it does not affect pipeline imports, for now, due to Hungarian objections.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said sanctions should include oil, “so that Russia can see the price of what it’s doing against Ukraine and all of Europe.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered on February 24 what he calls a “special military operation” to demilitarize Ukraine.
The West and Kiev see this reasoning as false for starting the war./VOA
