A Ukrainian journalist used Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s visit to Ankara to embarrass him with a question about wheat exports from Ukraine, amid fears of global hunger if the issue is not resolved.
Lavrov was in Turkey to discuss the creation of safe corridors for Ukrainian grain exports. But the press conference of him and Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu was ending without the possibility for journalist Muslim Umerov to ask his question, despite repeated efforts. So the journalist stood up and addressed Lavrov directly.
“I’m from Ukrainian public television, I want to ask a question!” he said.
“Apart from cereals, what goods did you steal from Ukraine and to whom did you sell them?” asked the journalist.
Lavrov, smiling, returned itu: “You Ukrainians are always worried about what you might steal and you think everyone thinks so! Our intentions there are clear, we want to save people from the pressure of the neo-Nazi regime. We are not hindering wheat. “In order for her to leave the ports, Mr. Zelensky must give the order, that’s all.”
Ukraine’s ambassador to Ankara on Friday accused Russia of stealing and exporting Ukrainian wheat, particularly to Turkey.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Lavrov has made rare visits abroad, which have led him especially to China, India, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and twice to Turkey.
