Two Britons and a Moroccan who fought in Ukraine for Kiev have been sentenced to death today by a court in the eastern Donetsk region.
The British Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner, as well as the Moroccan Saadun Ibrahim, were found guilty as mercenaries by pro-Russian autocrats, who tried to seize power in the separatist republic.
They were charged with attempted terrorist acts in the territory known as the Republic by Russia, but considered a ‘separatist province’ by Western countries.
Separatist media reported that the three defendants pleaded guilty to training charges of committing terrorist acts for the violent overthrow of power in Donetsk, but denied that they were mercenaries hired by Kiev.
Convicts can appeal the decision, which they said they will uphold, or they can apologize to the local authorities.
If they win on appeal it is believed their sentence could be reduced to 25 years in prison.
The three foreign fighters were captured near the city of Mariupol, the port that has already become part of the Donetsk republic.
London has demanded that its citizens be treated as prisoners of war under the Geneva Convention, even though Britain is not officially at war with the pro-Russian separatist republic.
