Palestinians had descended en masse yesterday on the Mediterranean beach of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza as schools began summer vacations.
Local 65-year-old Farid Naim says last summer the Israeli army did not allow them to go ashore due to the riots.
“The sea is the only liberation we have here in the Gaza Strip. “Last year he was not allowed to come to the beach, it was an atmosphere of war,” said Naim.
Even Ahmed al-Attar, also a resident of Gaza, says he is happy with the large number of people he sees on the beach.
“This year is a little different. Last year was an atmosphere of war and people were very worried. This year there are a lot of people on the beach. “They come to stay in the sand and swim in the sea.”
Beit Lahia white beach stretches for two km from the Israeli border to al-Shati, north of Gaza.
Street vendors offer boiled corn or sweet potatoes from their carts, while those who own horses are seen bathing in the sea.
Isolated from the world by tight border controls from both Israel and Egypt in the south, many Gaza residents view the beach as a temporary escape from problems.
The beach also brings a small business opportunity for residents who have lost much of the Middle East’s worst conflict.
