North Korea on Thursday reported the outbreak of an unidentified intestinal epidemic in an agricultural region.
This news aggravates this isolated state even more, as it faces chronic food shortages and a wave of coronavirus infections.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent medicine to the western city of Haeju on Wednesday to help patients facing an “acute enteric epidemic,” the state-run KCNA news agency said, without giving details of the number affected. and without identifying the disease.
The term enteric refers to the gastrointestinal tract.
“Kim has stressed the need to stop the epidemic as soon as possible, taking quarantine measures for suspected cases,” KCNA said.
A South Korean Union Ministry official who is dealing with issues between the two Koreas has said the government is monitoring the blast, which is suspected to be cholera or typhoid, diseases caused by contaminated water or food, or contact with the feces of the infected person.
Reporting of this outbreak comes as North Koreans are facing the first outbreak of coronavirus infections.
North Korea declared a state of emergency last month as authorities faced a shortage of vaccines and other medicines.
South Korea’s spy agency has told lawmakers that water-borne diseases, such as typhoid, have spread to North Korea even before the coronavirus broke out. REL
