A vacationer was hanged when an unprecedented “mini-tornado” on the beach in the north of France crashed into the windows of a restaurant.
The 31-year-old died on the spot when a sudden wind lifted him into the air knocking him down hard on the beach of Villers-sur-Mer in northern France.
Five other people were injured on the beach in Normandy after being hit by a sudden storm on Saturday.
Local media described the storm as a “mini tornado” which caused three other minor injuries.
The rare weather phenomenon was not predicted by meteorologists, who did not expect the winds to intensify to this extent, according to the network. Francebleu.
The town’s mayor, Thierry Granturco, described the storm as “sometimes unknown violence on our shores”.
The strong wind had lasted 20-25 minutes on C plate Fleurie beach between Ouistreham and Deauville.
Granturco told Franceinfo: “It started to blow more and more and ended with a mini tornado.”
“We communicated with Météo France who said they did not have the capacity to predict this mini tornado.”
“We knew there would be winds, which were announced the night before.”
According to forecasters of Francetvinfo of Météo France were predicted to be “small local storms heading towards Normandy from the southwest”.
But the mini-tornado left a wave of destruction on the beach and residents ran to defend themselves.
The mayor later wrote: “Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased, whom we accompanied to the emergency department but could not survive.”
