Hundreds of Peruvian fishermen took part yesterday in the religious procession to honor Saint San Pedro wishing him auspicious hunting, south of the capital Lima.
The fishermen dressed in suits and collars for the event, had left the daily work for the colorful celebration with boats near the shores of the bay.
With white and pink roses in their jackets the Chorrillos fishermen carried the image of San Pedro they had taken from the church, sailing it peacefully around the bay.
Hundreds of others, meanwhile, attended the shore ritual or dined at fish restaurants on the harbor façade, a tradition dating back to colonial times.
The San Pedro procession was repeated in many locations in the province of Lima accompanied by an influx of people to the beaches and coves.
“We praise San Pedro in order to have more fish on the hunt,” says fisherman Marcos Herrera, who sells sardines and other fish on the Chorrillo pier.
The festive atmosphere was felt throughout Chorrillos, where he came for a greeting with fishermen and Peruvian president Pedro Castillo.
Peru has about 2,000 kilometers of coastline and its main food dishes consist of fish.
Demand is constantly rising on the Catholic holiday days of San Pedra and San Paolo.
