The heads of law enforcement agencies in the United States and Britain have issued a joint warning about Chinese espionage, saying Beijing’s efforts pose “the biggest long-term threat”.
During an appearance in London on July 6 alongside FBI director Christopher Wray, MI5 chief Ken McCallum said the British agency had “redoubled efforts against disturbing Chinese activity”.
The Chinese government and its “covert pressure around the world” is “the biggest challenge we face,” he said.
“This may seem abstract. But it’s real and it’s urgent,” McCallum said. “We need to talk about this issue, we need to act.”
The head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Christopher Wray, agreed with these sentiments, saying that Beijing “poses the greatest long-term threat” to the economy and national security of London and Washington, and of allies in Europe and elsewhere. .
“The Chinese government is trying to shape the world by interfering in our politics and that of our allies,” Wray said, speaking at MI5 headquarters in London.
The Chinese government’s hacking program “is bigger than the major countries combined,” Wray said.
This joint appearance of the two officials shows how big a challenge the US and Britain consider the Chinese Government and its intelligence.
A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in London declined to comment.
“These claims against China by American and British intelligence officials are completely baseless and the so-called cases they have mentioned are pure persecution,” this spokesman told Reuters.
London and Washington must “give up the Cold War mentality which has gone out of fashion… and must stop creating confrontations and conflicts,” said this official of the Chinese Embassy in London./Rel
