Iran’s state media today published images of naval divisions of warships and submarines capable of launching combat drones as Joe Biden tours the Middle East.
The US and Israel, Iran’s main foes, have previously accused the Islamic Republic of using drones and missiles to attack US naval forces in the Persian Gulf.
“The first naval drone division of Iran’s navy consists of various combat, reconnaissance and destruction equipment,” state television said.
“All types of advanced drones are manufactured by Iran’s military and have flown in the Indian Ocean to demonstrate their capabilities,” the report said.
The footage showed drones being lifted off from sailing vessels.
The announcement comes as Biden makes his first presidential visit to Israel and Saudi Arabia.
In October 2021, the US imposed sanctions on Iran’s drone program, accusing it of distributing technology in the region to groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthi rebels in Yemen and the Palestinian movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
