European Union member states should start preparing for the new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, which could occur in the fall and winter, the bloc’s health chief said on July 25, noting that there has been a “disturbing increase” in virus outbreaks. .
The Commissioner for Health and Food Safety of the EU, Stella Kyriakides, also warned that there is no room for complacency, as the pandemic is not over.
“Unfortunately, the pandemic has shown a worrying increase in some countries,” she told Cyprus state radio.
“In the last two months, we have been preparing for autumn and winter, fully aware that the new wave of the pandemic cannot and should not burden our economies and societies even more, especially at a time when they have been affected by the invasion Ukraine’s Russian and inflation,” she said.
Kyriakides, who is from Cyprus, told the country’s radio that the European Commission has asked member states to speed up vaccination with booster doses of the population over 60 and vulnerable groups.
