Today, Prime Minister Edi Rama inspected the situation in some of the areas affected by heavy rains in the south of the country, Fier and Vlora.
The critical situation due to the large inflows of the Vjosa River, mobilized all operational structures on the ground, 24 hours, without interruption and through evacuation-rescue operations with the commitment of the Armed Forces ensured the relocation of citizens outside the endangered areas.
Prime Minister Rama inspected two of the government investment embankments, which yielded results in coping with the situation, as they did not allow floods in Darzeze, which has historically been one of the most flooded areas.
The Mayor of Fier, Armando Subashi, informed that currently the situation is stable, as Vjosa has been withdrawn and the level of inflows has dropped significantly. “Kno it is the embankment we made two years ago. With the help of the army forces we raised the level and from what happened to us yesterday, gave us quite a result in a good part of the surface. Today, the waters have receded, but yesterday in certain parts of this embankment the water has crossed the embankment. The amount of Vjosa inflows yesterday was beyond forecasts. Today we are talking when we are doing the balance sheets, we have no problems in a good part of the field below and we have almost zero problems in Darzeza which has historically been the symbol of floods. We have some places since the water overflow, the embankment has suffered some minor damage, which we will start repairing tomorrow. This, as we anticipated, gave us quite a result in minimizing many problems. “
The Prime Minister said that thanks to the investments made for the new embankments and the maintenance of the system that has been restored for several years in drainage work, the situation has passed best.
“I just wanted to emphasize that, thanks to all the investments made and thanks to all the work done with the sewers that has already become a working system and kept clean, and thanks to the fantastic work that was done especially in the last 72 hours by all bodies and of all the forces, things have gone best if we consider where we were. With these types of inflows, the rain until a few years ago came to the center of Fier and here overturned the whole world. Darzeza, which was always underwater, even with less than that, today has not been affected at all. These are positive things. Now we have to take action to see what still needs to be improved with the embankment here, which we know very well that needs to be continued to get things in line, but as long as this is going to be a wild river and we want to keep it flowing wild and we have said that having a protected area, aiming to turn the Vjosa bed into a national park and certain areas into a national park, as long as no hydropower plant will be allowed, then that in itself has its risks that beautiful is the savagery of the river and nature, but then“, Said the Prime Minister.
The balance of damage from extremely massive river inflows has been greatly minimized, while the withdrawal of water from the fields has occurred in record time. But the Prime Minister stressed that some interventions should be made again on the embankments and bridges. “Now we have to see the part of the elements that need to be added. From this, to the points that have been problematic, should be addressed in order to in a case then narrow as much as possible the range of damage that was still much smaller than it could be without the investments made and without the embankments that we did years. The embankment did its job. This is the most meaningful indicator of the functioning of the entire sewer system that the rapid drainage of water comes from the drainage system that is completely on its feet that otherwise it would stay here as it did in other years. Now we have to deal with the bridge and a project has to be done to understand exactly what intervention needs to be done but the important thing is that all the rest has held. Now we need to address those 2-3 points that have turned out to need intervention, but with all this volume of rainfall that we saw, it is really to congratulate the work of everyone. “
Defense Minister Niko Peleshi said that investments made in embankments have saved entire areas of land from flooding. “The investment in the two embankments we saw, in Fitore and Cervena, has saved 2-3 thousand hectares of land that have not been flooded, although the inflows were higher than in 2017. The investment to expand the legs of the bridge down, would greatly minimize. It has never happened that the water is withdrawn within 10-12 hours. ” – said Minister Peleshi.
The Prime Minister demanded that the residents, whose houses are located in the endangered areas, be settled in safer areas. “Even for those who are close to the river, a way must be seen to move them to a social housing because there you build on the river bed and there is no embankment and a dam to protect you. “Now the radius of the families affected is very narrow, it is very little and so little that they can be moved normally, building flats and removing them from there because they can not stand at the foot of bridges and on the river bank.” – said the Prime Minister.
