The revenues of the Albanian economy from the tailoring sector this year have reached the highest levels recorded for at least 13 years.
Statistics of the Bank of Albania show that the net income from active goods processing services in Albania for 9 months reached the value of 380 million euros, 19% more compared to a year ago. This is the highest figure recorded in the historical Balance of Payments series. Fasoneria this year is proving to be the third largest net contributor to the country’s current account, after tourism and remittances.
The free labor force is the main “product” where Albanian exports were supported after the fall of the communist regime. Fasoneria has traditionally been mainly focused on the production of custom clothing and footwear from abroad. In this sector alone it is estimated that there are about 700 enterprises, with more than 30 thousand employees.
This segment has so far refuted the pessimistic predictions of the 2000s, that tailoring would have a short development cycle, due to the gradual increase in living standards and labor costs, as well as competition from markets where labor is cheaper. . In fact, tailoring in the textile and footwear sectors has survived, even grown, despite the major problems associated with labor shortages. These sectors have used the experience gained over the years, the proximity to the European Union countries, but also the fact that the increase in labor costs has been slow and far from those levels that could undermine the competitiveness of enterprises in this sector.
However, the range of activities based on tailoring has expanded over the years. In addition to textiles and footwear, custom production is also extended to segments of the food industry, mainly seafood processing. A growing activity with still great development potential is also the automotive industry or the production of spare parts for machines, machinery and equipment. Unlike textiles and footwear, other tailoring activities are not divided into separate statistical sections and this makes it difficult to calculate their contribution to production and employment.
But, it is certain that the free labor force has an even wider contribution than that associated with tailoring. One important sector with a major impact on the economy and employment in the last two decades is that of the call center. Initially these activities were related to the provision of remote customer care services, taking advantage of the high number of young Albanians who had knowledge of foreign languages.
