Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jingping held a virtual meeting on Wednesday (December 15th) to discuss bilateral relations and international affairs. The meeting comes at a time of rising tensions between Moscow and the West over the gathering of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine.
At the beginning of the meeting, Putin and Xi praised the relations between their two countries, while the Russian president said that Russia-China relations “are a good example of cooperation between the countries in the 21st century.”
A new model of cooperation has been created between our two states that is based, among other things, on principles such as non-interference in internal affairs (of the respective states), respect for the interests of our states, commitment to return the common border “In a generation of eternal peace and good neighborliness,” Putin said.
President Xi said his Russian counterpart “strongly supports China’s efforts to protect key national interests and strongly opposes efforts to create divisions between our two countries.”
Meanwhile, Putin said he plans to meet with Xi in Beijing in February and indicated that he intends to participate in the Winter Olympics.
“As we agreed, we will hold talks and attend the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics,” Putin said.
In recent years, China and Russia have aligned their foreign policy to counter US dominance in the world economy, but also in the political sphere. Both states have been sanctioned because of their domestic policies.
China has been sanctioned for violating the rights of minorities, especially Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang, but also for suppressing the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. Russia, meanwhile, has faced international sanctions over its illegal annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and the poisoning and imprisonment of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Beijing and Washington have disagreements over China’s trade, technology and military intimidation of Taiwan, as Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory.
Relations between Russia and the United States have also deteriorated since the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Moscow’s support for separatists in eastern Ukraine. Tensions have risen even more in recent weeks as Moscow has amassed tens of thousands of troops near the border with Ukraine.
Kiev and the West have expressed fears that Russia is planning to invade Ukraine. But Moscow has denied such plans and accused Kiev of sending troops to the east of the country in order to regain control of separatist-held areas.
