At least 11 people have been killed and 31 rescued after a migrant boat capsized in the north of the island of Puerto Rico, officials said.
Among the survivors were eight Haitians, following an extensive rescue operation by the U.S. Coast Guard.
It is not clear how many people were on board the vehicle, which was spotted by border protection authorities about 11 miles north of the small uninhabited island of Desecheo near Puerto Rico.
“We are looking at how many people we can find and help as many survivors as possible,” said Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad, adding that it was fortunate that officials saw problems with the boat.
The latest disaster follows a series of similar incidents where boats with people depart from Haiti or the Dominican Republic to the American islands of Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands.
Over the weekend 68 migrants were rescued in the waters between the island of Hispaniola and US territory, where a woman lost her life, according to the Castrodad network.
In January more than thirty migrants are believed to have lost their lives after their boat capsized during a storm in the Bahamas.
