The death toll from an explosion at an illegal crude oil refinery in southern Nigeria has risen to 110, emergency services said today.
The number of victims of Saturday night tragedy was initially 80, but other people died from their injuries.
The head of national emergencies Ifeani Naji said that dozens of people with severe burns are still in hospitals, according to the AFP network.
“We found bodies in the forest vegetation, working for illegal operators, who have already escaped,” he added.
Burned vehicles and buckets for the collection of oil and its products, were scattered at the site of the disaster.
Idris Musa, head of the government agency for responding to oil spills, said investigations are under way.
“Many bodies could not be identified by the burns, while others trying to escape were found hanging from trees,” he said.
